“How A Student With $1,100, Launched WhitePages, A $57 Mil A Year Business”
Here’s an interview that I just did with Andrew Warner at Mixergy mainly covering the early days of WhitePages. Also, I covered a few other topics including why I think Seattle beats (or “should” beat) the Bay Area.
Correction: I mistakenly said that I did a $10,000 deal for licensing data. It was actually for $5,000 for a year’s worth with ABI (American Business Information) — been a long time since I talked about that figure. They actually would have had no idea what I was doing unless I called them upfront to ask for permission (I wish certain hackers would do that before we catch them on WhitePages.com). Even after the deal was done with ABI, I don’t think they realized that their website was often brought down to its knees based on the 50x query load that WhitePages imposed on their site. But regardless of what I could have gotten away with, it was the right thing to do to secure the license and rights to the data.
